Introduction
Between painting, volume and drawing, Maude Maris has created a plastic and mental universe based on the representation of a world peopled with carefully articulated forms, objects and colours. The paintings of Maude Maris, marked by an almost uneasy illusionism in proportion to their seeming coldness of execution, are the terms of a process of preparation which uses the techniques of architectural modelling, design and industrial sketching.
The artist continues to search for objects in relation to the idea of controlled nature: toys, everyday scraps and decorative elements. After this comes the work of cutting, sanding and plaster casting. With the succession of castings she creates a collection of objects which she classifies in families according to their forms, colours or power of evocation. The new objects are then placed in a three-walled box. These compositions are photographed and then painted on canvas. The still lifes of Maude Maris are frozen in time and space. The final work is thus derived from a long process marked by filters which lead to a smoothed image. By eliminating thickness and texture, the artist strives to maintain an effect of almost chirurgical distance from the subject. Little by little, other objects have colonized this same space, thus participating in the theatrical character of her work by adopting the function of both decor and characters.
