Introduction
Sophie KITCHING
Through her practice, Sophie Kitching transforms images and cultural objects into installations, videos, paintings and performances. Based on the critical observation of her environment, her work explores concepts related to mobility, denaturation, utopia and memory.
Focusing on producing spaces rather than images, her works are thought primarily in terms of systems and propose ephemeral and fragmented intervals of projection where different realities overlap. The landscape, for its part, is understood as an active environment, which the artist explores as context, content and form.
Following a conceptual approach, Sophie Kitching thus constructs a poetic in-between that establishes a feeling of immediate proximity and a possible intimacy with her works.
Sophie Kitching was born in 1990, Isle of Wight (UK). She lives and works in New York (USA) and Paris (FR).
Sophie Kitching studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. She also studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York (2012). Since 2012, her work have been regularly exhibited in New York, Marseille and Paris, where she is represented by the Isabelle Gounod Gallery since 2019. Sophie Kitching has been nominated for the Emerige Revelation Grant in 2016.
